Member Spotlight

Our goal is to spotlight members on a regular basis to recognize their accomplishments, positive attitude, regular attendance, and overall awesomeness!

Robin Pitvoric

Interventionist and Counselor

Robin is a longtime member of CrossFit Elizabethtown. In fact, she’s been around almost since we opened our doors. Since then she’s made steady, significant progress and has shown a determination and willingness to put in the hard work – which are some of the reasons we chose her.

But we’ll let her tell you about her experience here at CFE …

HOW DID YOU HEAR ABOUT CROSSFIT AND WHAT WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE/WOD?

Thanks to my nephew Markham Dowell. I never heard of CrossFit and was curious. Mark is quite the salesman and his enthusiasm helped me decide to go. All I remember about my first WOD was wall balls. I had never done a wall ball. The coach’s instruction helped me understand how to do things correctly. I was not physically in shape at the time. The WOD was challenging but the encouragement felt by those around me kept me going.

I felt a great accomplishment when I left.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST START AT CFE?

I first came to CrossFit in the spring of 2013.

HOW MANY DAYS DO YOU CROSSFIT?

I try to make at least 4 days a week.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU/KEEPS YOU COMING BACK TO CFE?

One of the things I like the most is we do something different every day. We work on the whole body. The support and people who also attend the gym is amazing. I had never done workouts like we do at CrossFit. The coaches were patient and thorough in teaching the correct movements. We all support each other and push each other to be better. There were many times I wanted to quit a workout but the support from everyone kept me going. I couldn’t ask for a better work out crew. I would never push myself as I do at CFE.

WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU NOTICED (MENTALLY AND/OR PHYSICALLY SINCE STARTING CFE?

Since I started I have lost 18 pounds and have increased my muscle mass. I have more energy and I am able to accomplish everything I need to without being exhausted. My blood pressure was a slight risk and now it is normal. After a long day at work, CrossFit removes all the stressors. I look forward to it every day. I know I will be energized afterwards. People always compliment me on how I look for my age.

Oh, forgot to tell everyone I am 56.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT CFE?

The people and the coaches are amazing. Everyone is friendly no matter level of ability and age. We are not compared to others but ourselves. I love the challenge and the accomplishment I feel afterwards.

WHAT ACCOMPLISHMENTS ARE YOU THE MOST PROUD OF (OUTSIDE AND INSIDE THE GYM)?

I am most proud of being a mother to Jeff. He is also a CrossFit member and I love being able to share this experience with him. He is a great support and encourages me when I am hard on myself. He is an amazing father and son.

At the gym my greatest accomplishment is never giving up and improving skills, especially those involving lifting movements.

AFTER A HARD WORKOUT, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEAL?

Protein shake, no preference for food, just something healthy.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE LIFT/MOVE?

Squat movements, box jumps.

WHAT IS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE LIFT/MOVE?

Strict push press, snatch.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR INTEREST OUTSIDE OF CROSSFIT?

I like spending time with family, being with my granddaughter Nevaeh’a, going to the movies, eating out, and being with friends.

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVING?

I am an Interventionist and Counselor at New Highland Elementary. I work with students at risk. I also coordinate the Hardin County Migrant Education Program.

WHAT IS ONE GOAL THAT YOU ARE CURRENTLY WORKING ON?

Push myself to lift heavier weights, and be faster.

DO YOU HAVE ANY CLOSE FRIENDS OR FAMILY WHO ARE ALSO MEMBERS OF CFE?

Mark Dowell, Jeff Pitvorec, Chalis Packer, Summer Jenkins and those 4:30 regulars. All of them have made amazing transformations in eating habits, weight and strength.

WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE WHO IS THINKING ABOUT JOINING CFE?

Someone asked me recently why I go and I sincerely told them that it is one of the best decisions I have ever made. I love it!!! We are all busy and have responsibilities. Don’t let your weight, age, time, or ability be an excuse. You have people who will support you through it.

NO EXCUSES!!! Make yourself important!!!!

THANK YOU, ROBIN, FOR BEING SUCH A GREAT EXAMPLE AND PUSHING US ALL TO DO OUR BEST!

Shane Kurtz

Structural Engineer

We're excited to announce Shane as our second member in "Member Spotlight"! Shane has been a faithful member of our early-morning crew since we opened our doors in 2013. He's often there waiting when the coaches show up to open the doors! His patience, persistence, and progress (#PPP) have helped him develop into a fine athlete. Also, his positive attitude and consistent work ethic help drive others around him to constantly improve their own fitness.

Shane's contribution to our community extends beyond his performance in the gym! He revamped our website and is always there to lend a hand when we need help with events. We are so happy to have Shane as a charter member of our fine community of fitness.

HOW DID YOU HEAR ABOUT CROSSFIT?

The majority of my hours at work are typically spent at a desk and at the time, I wasn’t happy with my level of fitness and was looking for a way to be more active. I started running multiple times week and using a home gym machine that I had, but I wasn’t consistent and found it hard to stay motivated. I started searching for other options and found out that a new CrossFit gym was opening in Elizabethtown, so I decided to try it out.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST EXPERIENCE/WOD?

My first WOD was not what I had expected. I thought I was in pretty good shape, but the coach was quickly scaling the WOD for me to allow me to finish. The workout was hard and I found myself out of breath and unable to continue to do the work as prescribed much faster than anticipated. It was a very humbling experience that made me more determined to keep coming back to improve.

WHEN DID YOU FIRST COME TO CFE?

I came to the soft opening in 2013 to check it out and to see if it was something I’d like to try. I liked the people and the atmosphere, so I signed up for an annual contract and have been hooked since then.

HOW MANY DAYS A WEEK DO YOU CROSSFIT?

Typically, I’m there five days a week, even if I have to come in earlier or later to make it happen. Sometimes I may make it in an extra day, but I like to give my body plenty of time to recover.

WHAT MOTIVATES YOU/KEEPS YOU COMING BACK TO CFE?

One of the biggest motivators is the people. I enjoy the competitive nature of many of the workouts and it is great to have people around you to keep you motivated and push you to be better. Also, the results that I have seen, not only for me, but also for the people around me. The coaches and programming are continually challenging my body and forcing me to grow as an athlete.

WHAT CHANGES HAVE YOU NOTICED (MENTAL AND/OR PHYSICAL) SINCE STARTING CROSSFIT?

The biggest change for me has been self-confidence. I am able to do things now that I would have never been able to do before CrossFit. I have gained weight (muscle) and have become faster and much stronger than I was before.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT CFE?

The community. The workouts and programming are great, but without the coaches and the other members, it would just be another workout. Anyone could look up the workouts online and do them by yourself at home, but the encouragement and support that you receive from the coaches and other members has the greatest value, and you can’t get by yourself at home.

WHAT ACCOMPLISHMENT ARE YOU THE MOST PROUD OF (OUTSIDE AND INSIDE OF THE GYM)?

I’m proud of the fact that I stepped in the door three years ago and stuck with it and that fitness and being active has become such a large part of my life. I want to be a positive example for my children and it is great to see them interested in the things that I am doing both inside and outside of the gym.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE MEAL?

Pizza. Sometimes multiple times a week.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE LIFT/MOVE?

I like the gymnastics style movements like muscle ups and pullups the most. Favorite lift is probably the clean.

WHAT IS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE LIFT/MOVE?

Bar over burpees are the worst.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR INTEREST OUTSIDE OF CROSSFIT?

I love spending time with my family. I have a wife and two daughters and try to spend as much time as I can with them. We also get together with my parents, brothers and sister at least once a week. Other than that, I like staying active. I enjoy obstacle course races, sports, rock climbing and anything that I can do with friends.

WHAT DO YOU DO FOR A LIVING?

I’m a structural engineer at ICON Engineering in Elizabethtown. I design and analyze everything from small residential houses to large industrial or commercial buildings.

WHAT IS ONE GOAL THAT YOU ARE CURRENTLY WORKING ON?

I need to work on endurance and pacing.

DO YOU HAVE ANY CLOSE FRIENDS OR FAMILY WHO ARE ALSO MEMBERS OF CFE?

No, but I have gained friendships through my membership there.

WHAT WOULD YOU TELL SOMEONE WHO IS THINKING ABOUT JOINING CFE?

Try it (for free). The hardest part is probably going to be making yourself show up the first day, but after a few days, or maybe even the first day, you’ll see what this place is all about and will be hooked. The coaches and staff are great and the members will be there to help you out and give you encouragement and motivation along the way.
